Bordeaux profile: Beychevelle

Terroir, history and context There are many truisms spoken about the wines of the Médoc. And, to be honest, not all of them are true. But it is difficult to argue with the observation that if one is in the Médoc, one’s feet are dry, one is standing in a vineyard, and one can see the Gironde, then one is likely to be surrounded by excellent terroir – and the greater the expanse of the river one can see the greater the quality of that terroir. The proposition works well: Latour, Margaux, Léoville Las Cases, Montrose … and, of course, Beychevelle. Indeed,...

International Women’s Day: How the drinks industry is supporting women in 2020

With International Women’s Day right around the corner, brands are racing to launch initiatives that empower women in the workplace. After several years of experimental plantings, the first commercially viable vineyard was planted in 2016. The first crop was harvested on 26 February this year and the first wine will be released in 2021. Marselan is one of the more successful crossings of modern times. The Three Tiers of the Alcohol Industry

If you are interested in entering the alcohol industry, you will have to understand the workings of the alcohol industry’s three-tier system.  The three-tier system in the alcohol industry follows a chain of production, distribution and sales that is not unusual across industries. It was established post-prohibition, as an attempt to separate alcohol producers and retailers and break up the saloon-based system that was credited at the time with many social ills. Today,...
