From Destined Heir to Independent Founder
From an early age, Marc de Kuyper (43) was groomed to become the next leader of Koninklijke De Kuyper, one of the world’s oldest distilleries. As the eldest of the eleventh generation, he was widely seen as the obvious successor. He moved to the United States to establish De Kuyper’s presence, working diligently to expand the brand and secure its foothold in the U.S. market. But life had a different trajectory in store.
It was during this time that he made what he now calls, “the toughest decision of my life.” Despite the family’s expectations—and his own commitment—Marc chose to step away from the business he had long been destined to lead. He launched his own enterprise in the U.S. three years ago, pivoting away from tradition toward entrepreneurship and innovation .
A Difficult Departure
The choice to leave wasn’t made lightly. Marc reflects on the emotional weight of that pivotal moment: “When push came to shove, leaving felt ungrateful. The family had bet on me. Even my brother and sister had always…” The quote trails off, underscoring the unspoken pressures within a high-stakes family legacy .
Even though he was the clear frontrunner for the CEO role, he spent weeks in deep deliberation. The decision wasn’t just about career direction—it was a personal reckoning with loyalty, legacy, and self‑determination.
Building a New Path
Marc’s new venture, founded in 2018 and known as Overproof, delivers AI driven insights to global beverage alcohol brands. He brings to it the same strategic thinking, operational skills and brand positioning expertise he honed at De Kuyper.
Today the company is growing steadily and gaining recognition for introducing advanced data intelligence into an industry that had lagged in AI adoption. Marc’s journey shows how honoring one’s roots can coexist with forging an independent path—and how it is possible to channel family legacy into new ways of leading.
