What is a Dive Bar?  

There really is no clear definition when it comes to a dive bar. Traditionally, the term has been a colloquialism for a seedy bar that is not too concerned with upkeep. The term may originate from the fact that many of these bars were located in basements and cellars. Patrons could literally dive underground and enjoy some drinks without being noticed. Over the years, the term has evolved although it is still associated with being somewhat disreputable.  

However, the things that some people hate about dive bars are exactly what make them unique and a favorite destination for others. A dive bar is free of pretension and welcomes everyone. While the bathrooms might not always be clean and the menu might only consist of pretzels and peanuts, it is the no fuss environment that attracts people.

Ordering at a Dive Bar  

At a dive bar, the focus is on quick and easy drinks. Don’t expect a lot of fresh ingredients and fancy mixed cocktails. When ordering at a dive bar, your best bet is to keep it simple. Stick to some of the classics, such as a dark and stormy Jameson and ginger of a Cuba Libre, which consists of Coca Cola, lime and white rum. These drinks are pretty straightforward and you should be able to get a good price.  

How Do Dive Bars Earn Profits?  

With low prices and a no-frills model, you might be wondering how dive bars are able to turn a profit and stay in business. Essentially, these bars have to offer competitive pricing. This can mean low margins and low profits, but with a regular and loyal clientele, they are often able to survive on high volume sales. They also have to try and convert at least a small percentage of higher priced items on a regular basis. A dive bar may not be a money machine, but it can be a profitable business. 

Whether you are celebrating National Dive Bar day or just want a welcoming place where you can pull up to the bar and enjoy some cheap drinks, consider heading to your local dive bar. You may find a new hang out and end up becoming another regular.
